This book discusses and criticizes the subject of Minangkabau adat, and deals with the questions of inherited property in a matrilineal society, the function of the maternal uncles (ninik-mamak) and the life in the communal house (rumah gadang). It criticizes the lack of responsibility of men for support of their wives and children, and the burden on women doing most of the hard agricultural and business work.
