Pocos años después del desarrollo y popularización del cine, surgieron dos grandes tendencias que con el tiempo crearon la falsa dicotomía entre el documental y la ficción. Sin poder escapar de la naturaleza de la imagen fotografía, la imagen en movimiento dio lugar, de forma natural, a la creación de formas narrativas ficcionales que se elaboraban a través de representaciones objetivas de la realidad. Si bien de una manera reductiva, se percibían en el cine dos esferas opuestas que se plasmaban bien a través un documento objetivo, bien por una narración fruto de la imaginación.
