En agosto de 1914, ante el inicio de la Primera Guerra Mundial, el rey Alfonso XIII declaró fuera de la ley a todo aquel que realizara abiertamente proselitismo en favor de alguno de los bandos contendientes. Sin embargo, la medida fue considerablemente ineficaz, puesto que la opinión pública se fracturó en diversas corrientes que llenaron de tensión el espacio público español.

Dos son las propuestas de fondo que el historiador italiano Carmelo Furci realiza en este libro. Primero, que la Vía Chilena al Socialismo tuvo, como fundamento y hegemonía principal, la coherencia de la línea política trazada por el Partido Comunista de Chile desde el Frente del Pueblo (1952) hasta la Unidad Popular (1969-70) y, segundo, que dada la derrota de tal Vía por el golpe militar de 1973, este Partido tenía que reconsiderar lo que ya antes había eludido: la adopción del componente militar como factor permanente de su estrategia política.
