Edmundo De Amicis era un romántico en el más amplio sentido de la expresión. Y ese romanticismo suyo está muy presente en su ingente obra periodística, ensayística y literaria, hasta el punto en que, trascendiendo los géneros al uso, las crónicas de De Amicis terminaron por erigirse como un género propio, personal e irrepetíble.

El fracaso del mestizo indaga en el cine mexicano, desde Santa hasta Amores perros, con Los olvidados de por medio , y también en la narrativa, en un recorrido que parte de Al filo del agua y pasa por Pedro Páramo y Balún Canán para llegar a La región más transparente y cuestionar el tema más espinoso de nuestro siglo XX: la identidad. El proyecto cultural del Estado mexicano es así desmontado ladrillo a ladrillo para revelar el fracaso del mestizaje y el rencor del mestizo, acaso su más patente legado en nuestros días.
