El "Mar Cantábrico" prestó servicios al Gobierno de la República durante la Guerra Civil. En enero de 1937 fletó 8 aviones y toneladas de alimentos en Nueva York. Luego permaneció un mes en Veracruz, donde completó su carga bélica con municiones y armas, todo ello con destino a las tropas leales y, tras cambiar de nombre y ostentar bandera inglesa, fue capturado.
