Image and ritual in the Aztec world

Many of the 13 essays in this collection originate from the archaeology symposia of the Society for Latin American Studies held at Bradford University in 1989; others have been commissioned from people engaged in research in Central and South America. Subjects include the Aztec Cihuateteo, political stratification in Classic Maya society, shamanism and sculpture in Ancient West Mexico, underwater archaeolocical research in Bolivia, Inca ceremonial platforms in central Chile, early Inca architecture in Peru, fabrics of the Atacamba.

Results of a regional settlement study which argue that the emergence of highly nucleated early Wankarani villages can be attributed to concentration of highly productive land for a mixed farming-herding economy, defense, and labor pooling. There is little evidence of exotic imported goods, but some indication of small-scale village specialization and economic interdependence. Human beings strive to take away from our day to day everything that may bother us, such as old age, illness or death. The lessons that can be learned from epitaphs, sculptures and funerary monuments are ignored by all those who fear death. If we overcome our fears, death can teach us to live the moment.
