Ce codex est à l'origine un document pictographique constitué de la liste des tributs que doit supporter le village d'Otlazpan. Il est accompagné de deux types de textes écrits en espagnol, l'un provenant probablement d'un scribe autochtone, l'autre d'un fonctionnaire espagnol. Il s'agit d'un témoignage éclairant de la société née de la Conquête et de la misère dont les impôts locaux des autochtones furent progressivement captés par les Espagnols.
