Zoé Oldenbourg (1916-2002) llegó a Francia huyendo de la revolución bolchevique y es autora de una amplia obra narrativa y ensayística con la Edad Media, las cruzadas y el catarismo como protagonistas privilegiados. Tras terminar durante la segunda guerra mundial Barro y cenizas (1944), saltó a la fama internacional al conseguir el Premio Fémina con la novela La piedra amgular (1953), a la que siguieron Los Quemados (1960) y Las ciudades carnales (1961).
