El hilo conductor es la historia panameña. Como marco para su pensamiento, el autor delimita dos naciones panameñas, El dique y El agua, las cuales se entrelazan o se enfrentan. En su recorrido, muchas veces sinuoso, pasa revista de lo que piensan los extranjeros del panameño común, los éxitos setenteros de Rubén Blades, el léxico de los istmeños, Omar Torrijos, Manuel Antonio Noriega y otras muchas particularidades de sus paisanos. Finalmente, examina a la luz de esta información lo que fueron los llamados Papeles de Panamá.

La lluita estratègica, entre els rivals ideològics, dins l'Espanya republicana va ser tan important o més que la lluita militar.
