Un niño mendigo cuenta la historia de cómo un día un caballero le dejó su yegua para que la cuidase. Mientras espera su regreso, varios personajes se le acercan con distintos propósitos: un par de niñas, a las que pide dos barras de pan por dejarles tocar el animal, dos truhanes que tratan de comprárselo... Finalmente, llega un grupo de soldados y le advierten de que el caballo pertenece a un famoso salteador de caminos, Dick Turpin. Se esconden para atraparlo cuando vuelva, pero cae la noche y el niño, agotado, se monta en el caballo y escapa. Sin embargo, todo esto no es más que el relato que el niño inventa para tratar de vender la yegua.
