Los Borbones españoles y sus ministros, a la hora de diseñar reformas para sus colonias americanas en el siglo XVIII, advirtieron la necesidad de aproximarse a los diarios de viaje de las más diversas procedencias y períodos. Éstos se convirtieron en una de las principales fuentes de información sobre esos espacios, pues mediante su lectura podían obtener datos sobre aquello que no se conocía empíricamente.
