Compilación de las conversaciones del crítico peruano con escritores latinoamericanos y españoles. Este libro se propone una especie de taller literario: recorre las técnicas, hábitos y elaboraciones de cada autor en la intimidad de su obra, de su proyecto, de su arte y artesanía. Las conversaciones se realizaron entre 1970 y 1995, y dan cuenta de un cuarto de siglo de la biografía literaria en español, de su parte más innovadora y menos normativa, más exploratoria y menos canónica.
