En primer lugar, recuperó gran parte de sus posesiones italianas. Luego, desarrolló su marina de guerra -denominada la Real Armada- a partir de 1714, como arma disuasoria en su política exterior, sus navegaciones europeas y la defensa de su imperio americano y filipino.
